The thing I notice about people is that they think it won't happen to them, no matter how many times they hear it, or see stories like this.
I feel so bad for her and what happened and I am glad that she came alive out of that wreck. But, still, this experience and the fact that her "friends" all disappeared because they "got tired" should tell her something about who her "friends" were and what to look for in the new friendships she will be forming from now on. At least now she knows who is worth sticking around and who should go.
