The bishop who urged Donald Trump to "have mercy" on LGBTQ+ people and migrants has responded to the president's blunt reaction to her plea.
Within his first 24 hours in office, Trump signed multiple executive orders, including the controversial “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.”
The White House website states that the order enforces recognition of only "two genders", removing references to gender identity from federal forms and policies. The order also aims to end federal funding for gender ideology.
In addition to gender policies, Trump also implemented stricter immigration policies, aiming to tighten border security and redefine American citizenship.
The Bishop's Plea for Compassion
During an inaugural prayer service at the Washington National Cathedral, Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, Bishop of Washington, issued an emotional plea to President Trump.
She urged him to show compassion to LGBTQ+ individuals and migrants, reminding him of the nation's values of inclusion and humanity. Budde emphasized the fears faced by children in LGBTQ+ families and those from immigrant backgrounds.
“Millions have put their trust in you, and as you told the nation yesterday, you have felt the providential hand of a loving God," Budde said. "In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now.”
Trump's Response
President Trump, who attended the service alongside First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance, responded with a stoic expression throughout the plea.
Following the service, he reportedly told AP News, “Not too exciting. They could do much better.”
Bishop Budde’s Reaction
In an interview with CNN, Budde expressed her disappointment in Trump's reaction but reaffirmed her commitment to advocating for the marginalized.
“I wanted to counter, as gently as I could, with a reminder of the humanity and place of LGBTQ+ people and migrants in our wider community,” Budde said.
She further emphasized the importance of viewing immigrants as contributors to society rather than threats, adding, “They are good neighbors and faithful members of our churches and mosques.”
The Ongoing Debate
Trump’s policies have sparked a nationwide debate, with supporters arguing they restore traditional values, while critics say they undermine inclusivity and compassion.
Despite the backlash, Budde remains steadfast in her mission to promote mercy and understanding.
