The tragedy unfolded on Sunday evening, January 19, when Linh Luu and her boyfriend, 27-year-old Mikhael 'Misha' Romanenko, were heading to pick up her grandmother and aunt for a trip to the airport. Also in the car was the couple's beloved miniature Golden Doodle, Keeper.

"I don't understand why it happened the way it did, and I don't know how I'm alive," Luu shared in an emotional interview with ABC7 News. "Honestly, I want to trade places with him. He had such a purpose in this world."

The accident occurred at 6:00 PM at the intersection of 6th and Harrison streets. According to police reports, a black Tesla traveling at 98 miles per hour crashed into seven vehicles, including a Waymo autonomous car. Tragically, Romanenko and Keeper did not survive.

Luu recounted their final moments together, saying, "I remember looking over to him and saying, 'I love you,' and him saying, 'I love you too.' After that, I was being wheeled into different rooms."

Driver Facing Manslaughter Charges

The suspect, identified as 66-year-old Jia Lin Zheng, has been charged with vehicular manslaughter. A police report obtained by ABC7 News indicates that Zheng was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

"We are diligently combing through all the evidence to ensure the correct charging decision," stated San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins in an official release.

A Call for Change

While grappling with her immense loss, Luu is advocating for improved traffic safety at the intersection. "The way Sixth Street exists, you can go as fast as you want until you hit that stoplight," she explained.

Romanenko's tragic death is the city's second traffic fatality this year. In 2024, 41 lives were lost to vehicular crashes, highlighting the urgent need for stricter safety measures.

A Heartfelt Message to Others

As investigations continue, Luu is urging people to cherish their loved ones. "After losing everything and everyone, the love of my life, just please hug your loved ones. Tell them you love them."

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, with further details expected in the coming weeks.
