President Donald Trump has once again stirred global discussions with his renewed interest in acquiring Greenland, emphasizing the island’s strategic importance to U.S. national security. During an interview aboard Air Force One on January 25, Trump confidently asserted, “I think we're going to have it. I think the people want to be with us.”
The 78-year-old, sworn in as the 47th president on January 20, has long considered Greenland a vital asset, citing its location between North America and Europe and its vast reserves of natural resources, including rare earth minerals, uranium, and iron. According to The Times, Trump views the acquisition as a crucial move for ensuring “the protection of the free world.”
Greenland, an autonomous territory under the Kingdom of Denmark, has a population of around 56,000 and is home to the strategically significant Thule Air Base, a key asset for U.S. defense operations. Trump’s renewed push to acquire the island follows his earlier attempts in 2019, which were met with strong resistance from Danish and Greenlandic officials.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen swiftly responded to Trump’s recent remarks, reiterating that Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders and any decision on its future lies with them. "It would be a very unfriendly act if they didn't allow it to happen," Trump remarked, but Frederiksen maintained that Greenland’s autonomy is non-negotiable.
Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, expressed a willingness to strengthen cooperation with the U.S. but firmly stated that the island is not for sale.
