President Donald Trump has officially terminated the taxpayer-funded security detail provided to Dr. Anthony Fauci, former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), citing the necessity of limiting government expenses.
The security, initially assigned in 2020 due to threats received during the COVID-19 pandemic, was withdrawn Thursday night, according to a CNN report. Trump confirmed the decision during a press conference in Asheville, North Carolina, where he was visiting areas impacted by Hurricane Helene.
"When you work for the government, at some point your security detail comes off," Trump stated. "You can't have them forever."
The former president justified the move by pointing out that security details had also been revoked for other former officials, including former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former national security advisor John Bolton.
Trump dismissed concerns regarding Fauci’s safety, suggesting that high-profile individuals should finance their own protection. "They all made a lot of money. They can hire their own security," he remarked.
Earlier, President Joe Biden issued a preemptive pardon for Fauci before leaving office, shielding him from potential legal action related to the COVID-19 response. Despite their initial collaboration, Trump later criticized Fauci's pandemic recommendations as public opinion shifted.
Fauci, who led the NIAID from 1984 to 2022, played a key role in Operation Warp Speed and was awarded a presidential commendation for his contributions in vaccine development efforts.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates.
