Trump Spokesperson Denies Federal Worker Buyouts Are a Purge

The White House has dismissed claims that the Trump administration's federal worker buyout program is an effort to purge government employees critical of the president. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the initiative, emphasizing that it is meant to cut government costs while encouraging workers to return to office.

Under the program, full-time federal employees, except those in national security, the military, and the Postal Service, have been given the option to resign voluntarily by February 6. Those who opt-in will continue receiving pay and benefits until September.

White House: Buyout Plan Is Not Political

Addressing concerns, Leavitt stated, "If they don’t want to return, they have the option to resign." She added that the program has been widely welcomed outside Washington, D.C., and is not a tool for politically motivated dismissals.

However, critics argue that the buyout disproportionately affects employees who oppose Trump’s policies, potentially leading to a disruption in federal services.

Critics Warn of Government Disruptions

Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, warned that the buyout program could create instability. He stated that many citizens rely on these employees for essential services, and losing experienced workers could slow down government operations.

Meanwhile, federal employees have been asked to respond promptly regarding their decision to stay or resign. With the deadline approaching, it remains to be seen how many will take the offer.
