Former Representative Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) called President-elect Donald Trump’s comments an “attack on the rule of law” in response to his threat to imprison members of the House committee that investigated the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot.
According to a statement given to The Hill, Cheney stated, “Here is the truth: Donald Trump attempted to overturn the 2020 presidential election and seize power.”
She continued by asserting that Trump "organized a vengeful mob and led them to the US Capitol, where they assaulted law enforcement, broke into the structure, and stopped the official electoral vote counting."
Cheney added that Trump refused to order the crowd to disperse for hours while he watched the events unfold on television, during which police officers were severely beaten, and the Capitol was under attack.
Trump, in his typical fashion, took to social media to denounce Cheney, questioning why anyone within the Republican Party would support her actions and statements. He reiterated his longstanding claims of election fraud and accused Cheney of undermining his political movement.
This ongoing feud between Trump and Cheney reflects the broader division within the Republican Party, as pro-Trump loyalists continue to clash with establishment figures who challenge his narratives.
Despite criticism, Cheney remains steadfast in her position, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic principles and holding Trump accountable for his actions during and after his presidency.
