First-term Republican Representative Brandon Gill from Texas has ignited controversy with his call to deport Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) back to her native Somalia. On Tuesday, Gill took to his social media platform, asserting, “America would be a better place if @IlhanMN were deported back to Somalia.” His tweet was accompanied by a video clip that captured Omar advising Somali immigrants on how to resist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) by not answering questions without legal counsel.
The video, originally posted by conservative influencer Greg Price, shows Omar addressing a group of Somali immigrants—some of whom may be in the U.S. without proper documentation. Price’s commentary on the clip stated, “Ilhan Omar is now hosting workshops for Somalis living in the country illegally to advise them on how to avoid being deported.” This depiction sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with several users expressing support for Gill’s stance.
Among the online supporters, one comment read, “100%! She’s anti-American as they come. She pledged allegiance to the United States and has only ever acted against it. She’s a fraud, liar, and traitor to this country!” Another user questioned, “Isn’t this against the law? Expel her!” These voices have amplified Gill’s message, as he reiterated, “We should have never let Ilhan Omar into our country,” intensifying calls for stricter immigration enforcement.
A spokesperson for Gill further elaborated that Omar’s actions raise serious questions about her loyalty to the American people, suggesting that her advice to undocumented Somali immigrants undermines national security. During a subsequent interview with Mehdi Hasan on Zeteo, Omar dismissed her critics by saying, “These people are just idiots,” and lamented the overall decline in discourse, remarking, “I really am at the point where it has become really hard to have an intellectual debate with any of these people because the level of stupidity they are displaying every single day is frankly, embarrassing. Not just in Congress, but as Americans.” She added, “How else do we get a Trump presidency again?”
This fiery exchange underscores the deep divisions in American politics over immigration policy and national loyalty. While supporters of Brandon Gill see his call as a necessary measure to protect American interests, others view it as an example of the increasing polarization that is affecting political discourse today.
