In a chilling echo of past sea disasters, the cargo vessel Morning Midas, carrying around 3,000 vehicles—including 800 electric cars—was engulfed in flames off the coast of Alaska. Smoke was first seen billowing from the EV deck, where lithium battery fires are notoriously difficult to contain.
The 22-member crew abandoned ship after failing to extinguish the fire, safely evacuated via lifeboats with help from the U.S. Coast Guard. The incident is raising fresh alarms over the risks electric vehicles pose when transported in bulk by sea.
The ship had left China on May 26, heading for Mexico. A salvage tug has been dispatched, but experts warn these fires can reignite for days—if not weeks. In 2022, a similar fire caused the total loss of a ship loaded with Porsches and Bentleys.
As insurers call it a growing maritime hazard, the world is asking: are EVs ready for the high seas?
