“The curtain falls, the spotlight dims...” Those were the dramatic parting words of disgraced former Congressman George Santos as he prepared to report to federal prison on Friday.
Santos, once the rising star of New York’s 3rd congressional district, is now set to serve a brutal 87-month sentence for fraud, identity theft, and COVID-19 relief scams. His flamboyant exit on X (formerly Twitter) sounded less like a convicted felon’s farewell and more like the closing night of a Broadway play.
“Was it messy? Always. Glamorous? Occasionally. Honest? I tried… most days,” he quipped in a farewell post that instantly went viral.
Santos’s conviction includes defrauding donors with a fake $500,000 loan, forging documents to secure RNC matching funds, and illegally pocketing pandemic relief money—all while spending lavishly on designer items.
“He traded in his integrity for designer clothes and a luxury lifestyle,” said Nassau County DA Anne Donnelly.
Now stripped of power, Santos is the sixth member in U.S. history to be expelled from the House of Representatives. But even as he enters prison, he promises he’ll be back: “Legends never truly exit.”
