10-Year-Old Girl Dies After Reported Abuse—Father and Girlfriend Charged with First-Degree Murder

The tragic death of Rebekah Baptiste, a 10-year-old girl from Holbrook, Arizona, has sent shockwaves across the nation. Rebekah was found unresponsive in her home on July 27, 2025, and died three days later in the hospital—all alone, with no family at her side.

According to AZ Family, doctors revealed that she was malnourished, dehydrated, and covered in bruises. Her body showed clear signs of prolonged abuse. “She was black and blue from head to toe,” said her uncle Damon Hawkins, who also noted she had two black eyes and a haunting history of suffering that the system failed to stop.

Family’s Pleas Ignored

Rebekah’s family had reportedly contacted child protective services multiple times. “We have logs—so many times we reached out,” said Hawkins. “But nothing was done.”

Despite these warnings, no substantial intervention occurred. Her school, Empower College Prep, also confirmed they had contacted authorities about her condition 12 times. “Despite our repeated reports of suspected abuse and neglect, no meaningful action was taken,” the school stated.

Charges Filed

Rebekah’s father, Richard Baptiste, and his longtime girlfriend Anicia Woods have now been charged with first-degree murder and child abuse relating to Rebekah and her two younger brothers. Authorities say Woods admitted to hitting the children and claimed she was acting as their mother.

A Systemic Failure

The Arizona Department of Child Safety acknowledged that Rebekah was known to them, and released a public statement: “Our staff work tirelessly to protect children, but tragically, some evade even the most robust systems. We are now conducting a full review to identify failures and ensure accountability.”

The defendants are being held on $1 million bond each and are scheduled to appear in court on September 4.

Rebekah’s story has become a heartbreaking reminder of the cracks that still exist in child protection systems—and a call to action for stronger oversight, faster intervention, and community vigilance.
