In a terrifying afternoon of violence on August 11, 2025, a gunman opened fire in the parking lot of a Target store in North Austin, Texas, killing three individuals and injuring one more. The shooting occurred shortly after 2:00 PM at the busy Research Boulevard location.
According to Austin Police Department Chief Lisa Davis, the suspect—a 32-year-old male with a known history of mental health issues and previous criminal offenses—arrived at the Target parking lot and began firing indiscriminately. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while a third died en route to the hospital.
Suspect Caught After Chaotic Getaway
After the shooting, the suspect stole a Toyota truck—allegedly from one of the victims—and fled the scene. He crashed that vehicle nearby and hijacked another car from a Volkswagen dealership. Officers later located him 18 miles south of the shooting site. He was subdued with a taser and taken into custody. Charges are pending, and the motive remains unclear.
Witness Accounts and Community Response
Nearby Jiffy Lube employees, who share the same plaza as Target, described chaotic scenes. “People were running from their cars,” said employee Paul Smith. “I had just gotten back from Target—less than a minute before it started.”
Target Corporation issued a statement expressing grief: “Our hearts are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, our team in Austin and all those impacted by this tragedy.” They confirmed they are working closely with local law enforcement and offering grief counseling for employees.
Calls for Change
The incident has reignited debate about public safety and gun violence. Moms Demand Action, a national advocacy group, responded swiftly. “A trip to Target shouldn’t end in violence,” said volunteer Nadia Barbot. “It’s time our lawmakers step up to prioritize gun safety.”
Authorities are still investigating the suspect's background and have not yet released the names or ages of the victims. Social media rumors suggesting a child was among the victims were not confirmed during the press briefing.
Our thoughts remain with the families affected by this senseless act of violence.
