A tragic shooting shattered the quiet of the Mountain View community near Hickory, North Carolina, early Sunday, June 1. Deputies with the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office rushed to a chaotic scene on Walnut Acres Drive around 12:45 a.m.
According to authorities, around 100 people, including children, had gathered for what was supposed to be a night of celebration at a pool party. But the fun quickly turned into horror when gunfire erupted across the front and back yards, spilling even into a neighboring property.
By the time the shooting stopped, twelve people had been shot. One victim, 58-year-old Shawn Patrick Hood of Lenoir, tragically lost his life. Eleven others, ranging from teens to adults, were rushed to hospitals—some in critical condition.
Investigators revealed that multiple shooters and firearms were involved. Witnesses reported hearing more than 80 shots. The crime scene stretched nearly two acres, involving the house, surrounding yards, and nearby roads.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the FBI, and local police are all assisting with the case. Detectives continue piecing together the events of that night, working tirelessly to determine what sparked the violence.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. Community members remain shaken, grieving, and searching for answers after such senseless violence rocked their quiet neighborhood.
