The University of Kentucky community has been left heartbroken following the tragic passing of sophomore nursing student Kate Kaufling on March 31, 2024. She was just 20 years old, but in her short life, she inspired countless people through her courage, kindness, and strength.
Born in 2003, Kate was known not only for her dedication to her studies in the College of Nursing but also for her passion on the University of Kentucky Dance Team. Alongside her twin sister, Abbey, she brought energy, joy, and spirit to the floor. Her sorority sisters at Tri Delta, her teammates, and her friends describe her as someone whose smile could light up an entire room.
Kate’s battle began on June 2, 2023, when she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer. Even as she endured the challenges of treatment, Kate refused to give up her commitment to learning and to those she loved. Sandy Bell, UK’s executive associate athletics director, praised her resilience, saying: “Kate was not only a great dancer but also a great student who took her work very seriously.”
Dawn Walters, the head dance coach, remembered Kate as the heart of the team: “Her smile could light up a room, and everyone on the UKDT loved her. We are all very sad about Kate’s death.”
Her twin sister Abbey shared a moving tribute on Instagram: “My sweet Kate, you were my person.”
Kate is survived by her parents, Holly and Steve, and her beloved sister Abbey. Their grief is shared by an entire university, a community, and now, a nation that has come to know her story. She will be remembered not for the illness she fought, but for the joy, determination, and love she gave to the world.
Rest in peace, Kate Kaufling (2003-2024). Your light will never fade.
