Dan Haggerty, Who Played Grizzly Adams

Dan Haggerty, who played a gentle mountain man with a luxuriant beard and a bear named Ben in the 1974 movie “The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams” and the NBC television series of the same name, died on Friday in Burbank, Calif.

The cause was cancer of the spine, his friend and manager Terry Bomar said.

Mr. Haggerty was working as a stuntman and animal handler in Hollywood when a producer asked him to act in some opening scenes he was reshooting for a film about a woodsman and his bear.

Based on the novel “The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams,” by Charles Sellier Jr., it told the story of a California man falsely accused of murder who flees to the woods, where he develops a rapport with the animals around him and tames an orphaned bear.

Mr. Haggerty agreed, but only if he could do the entire movie. The film was remade for $165,000 and eventually took in nearly $30 million at the box office. It was then adapted for television, and in February 1977 Mr. Haggerty resumed his eco-friendly role as guardian of the woods and friend to the animals.

“It lukewarms the heart,” John Leonard wrote a review of the first episode in The New York Times. “Man and bear hide out in a log cabin, to which Mad Jack (Denver Pyle) and the noble red man Makuma (Don Shanks) bring flour and advice. When they leave the cabin, man traps fur while bear washes his. Meanwhile, there are raccoons, owls, deer, rabbits, hawks, badgers, cougars, a lot of communing with nature and a big lump in the throat.”

Genial and sentimental, the series endeared Mr. Haggerty to viewers and made him the winner of a People’s Choice Award in 1978 as the most popular actor in a new series. “Grizzly Adams” spawned two codas: “Legend of the Wild,” broadcast in 1978 and released theatrically in 1981, and “The Capture of Grizzly Adams,” broadcast as a TV movie in 1982, in which Adams is taken back to town by bounty hunters and finally clears his name.

Daniel Francis Haggerty was born on Nov. 19, 1942, in Los Angeles. His parents separated when he was 3, and he had a troubled childhood, escaping several times from military school before going to live with his father, an actor, in Burbank, Calif.

At 17 he married Diane Rooker. The marriage ended in divorce. His second wife, the former Samantha Hilton, died after a motorcycle accident in 2008. He is survived by his children, Megan, Tracy, Dylan, Cody and Don.

His first film was “Muscle Beach Party” (1964), in which he played a body builder named Biff opposite Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. Bit parts in biker and wildlife films followed, as characters like “Bearded Biker” or “Biker With Bandana.” He appeared briefly in “Easy Rider” as a member of the hippie commune that Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper visit.

In real life, Mr. Haggerty lived on a small ranch in Malibu Canyon with an assortment of wild animals that he had tamed at birth or rescued from injury. His skills led to jobs as an animal trainer and stuntman on the television series “Tarzan” and “Daktari,” as well as occasional film work. “Actors didn’t like animals leaping on them,” he told People magazine in 1978.

He made several films with an outdoor setting, including “Where the North Wind Blows” (1974), in which he played a Siberian tiger trapper, and “The Adventures of Frontier Fremont” (1976). He appeared as a dog trainer in the David Carradine film “Americana” (1983). In “Grizzly Mountain” (1997) and “Escape to Grizzly Mountain” (2000) he played a character very much like Grizzly Adams.

As his career cooled, Mr. Haggerty appeared in horror films like “Terror Night” (1987), “Elves” (1989) — playing an alcoholic mall Santa — and “Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan” (2013). In 1985 he was sentenced to 90 days in jail for selling cocaine to two undercover police officers.

In 1977, a careless restaurant patron carrying a flaming cocktail set Mr. Haggerty’s famous beard on fire. Trying to extinguish the flames, he suffered third-degree burns on his arms and was taken to a hospital for treatment that was expected to last a month.

“The first couple of days I just lay in the dark room drinking water, like a wounded wolf trying to heal himself,” he told People. “Nurses tried to give me morphine and encouraged me to open the curtains. But sometimes animals know more than people about healing.” He walked out of the hospital after 10 days.

The More Expensive The Wedding, The Shorter The Marriage Usually Lasts

For many, the most important day of their life is the day they unite in marriage with the person they love, many try in that day to be special and that the celebration be as they dream it, but if we are realistic the wedding dream can cost thousands and thousands, a large amount of money that perhaps most don’t have at that time. A recent study has shown that those who invested between $5,000 and $20,000 at their wedding have 5% more chance of losing their partner.

Which is the reason? Having no such amount of money to make the wedding of their dreams, many couples opt for loans, when finally the party takes place there are all the debts that have to be covered, which generates great stress to both, sometimes more to one that to another. Having the wedding as desired generates a large sum of money and recent study has revealed that the more expensive the wedding, the more likely it is that the marriage lasts less, so if you are otherwise a thrifty person who invests only enough and What is in your hands at the celebration, your marriage could last many, many years. Andrew Francis-Tan and Hugo M. Mialon lead the study, both are professors of economics and revealed some characteristics that increase the chances of an expensive wedding leading to a faster divorce. For this investigation, 3000 married and divorced people were surveyed who said an approximate cost of their wedding and ring, since both factors play a very important role in the duration of the marriage, according to Andrew and Hugo.

Those who spent between $ 500 and $ 2,000 at the ceremony are about 1.3 times less likely that their marriage will end soon. However, those who spent between $5,000 and $20,000, have a 5% more chance of ending up in divorce. Spending between $ 3,000 and $ 5,000 on an engagement ring also has the 1.3 times greater chance of ending up in a divorce compared to spending $ 500 to $ 2,000. The leaders of that study stressed that what doesn’t impact the duration of the marriage is the honeymoon and that the physical attraction between the couple is the most important factor in the duration of the marriage.

It is suggested that the intention of a divorce can start with the stress generated by the accounts and the debts that are given for making the dream wedding a reality that is always very expensive. It is worth mentioning that nothing like love, understanding, tolerance and respect is better for a long and healthy relationship. What do you think about this study? What was the total cost of your wedding?

This Turtle Carries a "World" in its Shell and its History is Worth Reading

The world is full of fantastic creatures that are hard to believe in their existence and we can only see them in movies, that's why we are amazed when we know about some of them which are really rare, a clear example is this incredible turtle that takes on its shell a layer of earth, even some think it could be the turtle that held the world as thought by the ancient cosmologists.
The photograph was taken by the professor of psychology at Franklin & Marshall College (Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA), Timothy Roth .
According to some experts, it is a snapping turtle ('Chelydra serpentine'), a species that has been researched and followed with radio transmitters by Task Force Turtle biologists for decades.

The biology professor at Washington College, Aaron R. Krochmal, was one of the initiators of the Task Force Turtle project. During his investigation, he explained that the turtle had surfaced after being two weeks plunged under the muddy ground of a lake that had dried.
Krochmal explained:
"We were not sure that the turtle was still holding the transmitter."
Most of the turtles had moved due to winter. This turtle buried in the depths without having any idea that would emerge. They imagined that maybe he had forgotten his winter guard and that he had lost the transmitter. Without having imagined the turtle emerged from the mud and began to walk.
Krochmal, also explained that the turtle has a weight of 6 kilograms and the incredible world that takes in its carapace measures 25 centimeters of thickness and weighs 8 kilograms. His large shell didn’t prevent him from walking to his place of hibernation.
These species follow the same path every year, from the place where they live in summer to the place where they shelter to wait for the cold to pass. Krochmal explained the following: "We think it's amazing that these animals use the same holes in the mud and return each year to the same place in the same hole, it's really incredible"
It is still a mystery about how turtles can survive underground for months without having to climb to the surface to get air. One theory explains that during hibernation these reptiles decrease their metabolism by which they breathe through the mouth and cloaca.
What do you think about this? Have you seen this turtle before carrying a small world in its shell?

The Health Secrets Of The Hunza People Who Live Over 100 Years And Are Cancer-Free

Cheerful, healthy and full of life, it seems as if the people of Hunza Valley belong to another planet. They eat fresh apricots, breathe the mountainous air, look youthful and they hardly ever get sick. People are often surprised when they learn that the citizens of Hunza (also known as Burusho people) usually live up to the age 120. They can easily conceive even after 60 years and it is very rare for them to get tumors. How is that possible? How do they stay healthy? Moreover, they only eat natural food products such as fruits, vegetables, grains, milk, and cheese. There are no chemicals or additives in their meals.

2. It is very common for Hunzas to have children after the age of 60.

5. There is no such thing as cancer in Hunza.

According to research, apricots of Hunza Valley are said to be the key behind the absence of tumors. Hunzas eat large amounts of the fruit which is rich in Amygdalin (vitamin B-17). Amygdalin is widely known for its anticancer properties.

6. The people of Hunza are not lazy. They are active and fast!

From dawn to dusk, the villagers work hard. Rather than watching movies and going on long drives, their idea of fun is to walk and indulge in sporty activities.

Once a year for a period of two to four months, Hunzas take a break from their regular diet and solely live on the juice of dried apricots. It is an old tradition that they still follow during the time when apricots are unripe. Scientists agree that it contributes to their amazing health.

It Broke Her Heart Seeing Her Daughter's Facebook Page, Asking For Someone To Please Be Her Friend

The thing I notice about people is that they think it won't happen to them, no matter how many times they hear it, or see stories like this.

I feel so bad for her and what happened and I am glad that she came alive out of that wreck. But, still, this experience and the fact that her "friends" all disappeared because they "got tired" should tell her something about who her "friends" were and what to look for in the new friendships she will be forming from now on. At least now she knows who is worth sticking around and who should go.

They Gave A Homeless Man A Pizza. What He Did With It Dropped My Jaw

The people who have SO little to give, always seem to be the quickest to give and share!! Doesn't that tell us ALL, that greed makes US ugly people inside!!!

It's beautiful that these men shared with this man and this man in return shared what little he had. A lot of us out there are one to two paychecks away from this hard life. One act of kindness can truly make a difference in someone elses life.
